SELECTION CRITERIA FOR THE CANADIAN NATIONAL TEAMS

SELECTION CRITERIA FOR THE CANADIAN NATIONAL TEAMS

AND THE CEC POINT SYSTEM

NOVEMBER, 2004

Selection for the National Teams is based primarily on a CEC registered competitor's points awarded at various CEC sanctioned competitions throughout the year.  The CEC selects the Youth National Team and the Open National Team shortly after their respective National Championships each competition season.  A competition season runs for 12 months beginning after the World Championships (usually in September of each year).

The Open Division and the Youth Division will have their own separate competition year and their points will be tracked separately.

YOUTH DIVISION - DIFFICULTY

Each season, Competition Climbing Canada (CEC) selects four (4) National Youth Team members in each age category for both males and females.  The age categories are: 11&U; 12 - 13; Youth B (14 - 15); Youth A (16 - 17); and Junior (18 - 19).  Competitors in  the Youth B, Youth A and Junior categories are eligible to  attend the World Youth Championships.  Competitors must have an active “Competitive Youth Membership”  to be eligible for selection to the Canadian Youth Difficulty Climbing Team.  Please visit the “Membership” tab on our website for fees and application deadlines.

TEAM APPLICATION - YOUTH

Members of the CEC Youth Division who are interested in becoming a member of the Canadian National Youth Difficulty Climbing Team must submit to the CEC, no later than the date of the Regional Championships each year, an application (“Team Application”) which includes a cover letter describing why they want to be considered for selection to the National Youth Difficulty Climbing Team; an up to date Climbing Resume; an executed  Competitors Agreement and an executed ACC waiver with the following words entered in the Activity space at the top of the waiver:  “Participation in the 2005 Youth World Cup”.

Further details of the application process will be posted on the CEC website.

If an athlete has applied for the National Team, then their parents/guardians must be prepared to advise the CEC if they will or will not be able to attend the Youth World Cup within three (3) days of the National Team being announced. Timing is crucial as travel arrangements and uniforms orders must be made.

TEAM SELECTION CRITERIA - YOUTH

Selection of the National Team for any position begins with the selection committees review of the each athlete’s Team Application.

In addition to the review of the Team Applications, selection for the top 3 positions in each category is then based upon each Applicants placing in the National Registry (see the section entitled YOUTH POINTS below) after the Nationals each year.

The number 4 position in each category, however, may be awarded by the selection committee to a competitor after taking into consideration any circumstances that were beyond the control of that competitor (i.e. injury or serious illness, lack of local events) that did not permit that competitor to accumulate all possible points. In order to receive this special consideration, a competitor must clearly state on his/her National Youth Team application:

i)                    that he/she was unable to accumulate all possible points due to external circumstances and would like to receive special consideration. Lack of finances is not a circumstance reviewable by the selection committee;

ii)                   the details of these circumstances plus any supporting documentation (doctors notes, list of local and regional events etc.); and

iii)                 any other factors or results that would indicate the competitor’s abilities and qualifications for selection to the National Youth Team (past National Team member, past international results, outdoor results in preceding 12 months, coaches letter of recommendation, etc).

The decision to grant special consideration is at the sole discretion of the CEC selection committee.

If there are no requests for special consideration within a category then the 4th place position in that category will be based upon a National Youth Team Applicants placing in the National Registry (see the section entitled YOUTH POINTS below) after the Nationals each year.

ALTERNATE SELECTION PROCESS – YOUTH

PHASE 1:  If a member of the National Team is unable to attend an internationally sanctioned ICC event then the selection committee will approach another competitor (“Alternate”) in that age category within one week of the position becoming available.  The selection process for the Alternate will take into consideration the following:

i)                    Selection priority will be the next highest placed athlete in that category (using the National Registry); and

ii)                   The athlete has applied for the National Team; and

iii)                 The athlete attended Nationals OR has provided on his/her Team Application, a valid circumstance for not attending Nationals; and

iv)                 The National team coaching staff deems the competitor capable and prepared to compete at the international event; and

v)                  The athlete’s Team Application and all supporting material contained in the application.

PHASE 2:  If a competitor in Phase 1 is selected using the above criteria yet is unable to attend the internationally sanctioned event then the selection committee may approach the next highest ranked competitor who qualifies using the criteria set out in PHASE 1 on the understanding that the final decision on selecting an alternate in this PHASE 2 will be at the discretion of the selection committee.

Any athlete selected in PHASE 1 or PHASE 2 will be given three (3) days to decide after being invited.

It is therefore very important that all parents be fully prepared to make a quick decision if their child has applied to be on the National Team.  Timing is crucial as travel arrangements and uniforms orders must be made.
