Youth Worlds Changes
Posted November 26, 2009

After much discussion and deliberation involving CEC executive members and the National Youth Team coaching staff, we are making significant logistical changes to the annual Youth World Championships trip.

Here is an overview of the key changes and the reasoning behind them:

History

Competition Climbing Canada has been sending athletes to the annual IFSC Youth World Championships since the event’s inaugural year in 1995. In the past, parents and friends have accompanied the team and coaches.

Over the past 4 years the numbers of friends and family have increased to a point where travel, accommodation, meals and other logistics have become tremendously challenging. In addition, the sheer size of the group has become a distraction to both coaches and athletes and has begun to interfere with the ability of the team to achieve its purpose in attending the YWC, namely, to perform at the best of its individual member’s abilities while being the most cohesive and supportive team at the event.

We believe that the changes below will allow our athletes and coaches to return to these core goals and values. Athletes and coaches will be better able to bond and spend time focusing on event preparation and the process of learning to become elite level competitors.

Changes

1.  Athletes will be supervised by 4 Team Canada Officials from 2 days prior to the start of the competition until the closing ceremony. Team members needing supervised travel from Canada to and from the host country hotel will have the option to make arrangements with a Team Canada Official at an additional cost.

2. The 4 Team Canada Officials will consist of a national team manager and 3 national team coaches. These officials will be selected by the CEC Youth Committee via a formal application process publicized through this website.

3. All travel, accommodation and meals during this period will be planned and co-ordinated by the team manager with the help of the 3 coaches. Travel and trip planning volunteers are welcome and invited to contact the team manager.

4. All training and technical issues will be the responsibility of the 3-person coaching team during this team period.

5. Friends and family will NOT be permitted to stay at the same hotel as the team during this team period.

6. There may be opportunities for friends and family to spend a limited amount of time with athletes at the sole discretion of the Team Canada Officials. This will be entirely dependent on event logistics and will always be arranged with the interest of ensuring the athletes’ abilities to focus and prepare properly for the event as the primary objective.

Comments and feedback are welcome.
