Selection Criteria

GOVERNING RULES AND REGULATIONS

The CEC Rules and Regulations as they may be amended from time to time shall govern all CEC Sanctioned Youth Competitions in Canada.

The CEC Rules and Regulations as they may be amended from time to time shall govern all sanctioned Lead Adult Competitions in Canada.

The CEC Rules and Regulations and the Tour De Bloc Rules and Regulations as they each may be amended from time to time shall govern all CEC Sanctioned Adult Bouldering Competitions in Canada.

TEAM SELECTION CRITERIA

International Competitions

Each calendar year there are several potential International Events to which the CEC sends National Teams (both Youth and Adult). Starting in 2009, the CEC is changing the selection process for National Teams. In the past, National Teams have been selected for the entire year and inclusive of all events. With the growing number of these events and the different quotas of competitors allowed for each, the change to selecting National Teams on an event by event basis is necessary. Below is an outline of the selection processes for: 1) World Youth Championships(annual), 2) Continental/Pan-Am Championships including SpiderKids (bi-annual) and 3) Adult World Cup Bouldering (varied frequency and locations). As other international events are announced, selection processes for these will be added here or communicated directly to CEC members.

Non-Canadians are welcome to the join the CEC and compete up to and including the Canadian National Championships. However, only Canadian citizens may apply to represent Canada at international competitions. Dual citizens must decide which country they wish to represent. Once a dual citizen has competed for a country in an International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) sanctioned competition,  regardless of the event (lead, bouldering, speed), they cannot compete for another country without special dispensation from the IFSC.

Competitors representing Canada at international competitions must hold a valid Canadian passport at the time they apply for a position to represent Canada.

Open vs. Youth Divisions

The CEC governs National Team selections and International licensing and competition for 2 divisions: Open (16 yrs and older) and Youth (19 yrs and younger). The Open and Youth Divisions of the CEC are separate entities, each with it’s[J1]  own competition calendar and National Ranking Tables. An athlete who is eligible (i.e. 16 yrs to 19 yrs) to compete in both divisions must have separate memberships in each. For reasons of event logistics, these athletes may NOT compete in both Youth and Open divisions at the same event.

A. YOUTH DIVISION SELECTION PROCESSES

  1. World Youth Championships (annual)

Competition Climbing Canada (CEC) selects  four (4) National Youth Team members in each age category for both males and females for entry in both Lead and Speed disciplines at the annual World Youth Championships. In addition, returning Continental/Pan-Am and World Youth gold medalists can be added to the quota for any age category. The following age categories are eligible for the WYC:

Youth B (14 - 15)
Youth A (16 - 17)
Junior (18 - 19)

Competitors must have an active “Competitive” Youth Membership to be eligible for selection.  Please visit the “Membership” tab on our website for fees and application deadlines.

a.     HOW TO APPLY: WORLD YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIPS (WYC)

The CEC will advise the competitive membership when applications for the WYC National Team are due.  As a minimum, the following information will be required with each application:

                          i.    a formal cover letter  identifying any considerations or extenuating circumstances that the Selection Committee should consider

                         ii.    an up-to-date Climbing Resume;

                        iii.    an executed Athletic Agreement;

                       iv.    an IFSC licence application;

                        v.    an executed ACC waiver with the following words entered in the Activity space at the top of the waiver:  “Participation in the “enter year” World Youth Championships”; and

                       vi.    Payment to the Alpine Club of Canada to assist with  coaches’ travel expenses to the World Youth Championships.  The amount varies by year but is generally around $100. Unsuccessful applicants will NOT be responsible for coaches’ travel expenses.

If an athlete has applied for the National Team, then their parents/guardians must be prepared to advise the CEC if they will or will not be able to attend the WYC immediately upon the National Team being announced (usually at the conclusion of the National Championships). Timing is critical as travel arrangements and uniforms orders must be made.

b.    TEAM SELECTION CRITERIA – WYC

                          i.    Selection of the National Team for any position begins with the selection committee’s review of each athlete’s Team Application.

                         ii.    Selection for the top 3 positions in each category is only available to those CEC Competitive members who have attended a minimum of the following CEC sanctioned competitions: three Youth Locals (see section below entitled YOUTH POINTS for ability to use Open Locals and/or USA Climbing Locals); one Youth Regional; and the Youth National Championships.  The selection for the top three positions is then based upon each qualifying applicants placing in the National Registry (see the section entitled YOUTH POINTS below).

                        iii.    The 4th place position in each category shall be awarded at the sole discretion of the selection committee.  The selection committee’s primary task with respect to the 4th place position is to select the most qualified competition climber from the remaining candidates. A competitors points in the National Registry is not the only criteria that will be considered. The selection committee shall take into account any matter that it deems necessary to make an informed and impartial and objective decision.  If the selection committee does not believe that any competitor qualifies for the 4th place position then no 4th place position shall be awarded.

                       iv.    The decision of the selection committee respecting the 4th place position is final.

c.    ALTERNATE SELECTION PROCESS WYC

                          i.    PHASE 1:

If a member of the National Team is unable to attend an internationally sanctioned IFSC event then the selection committee will approach another competitor (“Alternate”) in that age category.  The selection committee’s primary task with respect to the Alternate is to select the most qualified competition climber from the remaining candidates.  The selection committee shall take into account any matter that it deems necessary to make an informed and impartial and objective decision.  If the selection committee does not believe that any competitor qualifies for the Alternate position then no Alternate position shall be awarded. Any athlete selected in this PHASE 1 must advise the selection committee immediately after being invited. It is very important that all parents/guardians be fully prepared to make a quick decision if their child has applied to be on the National Team.  Timing is crucial as travel arrangements and uniforms orders must be made.

                         ii.    PHASE 2:

 If a competitor in Phase 1 is selected yet is unable to attend the internationally sanctioned event then the selection committee may approach another competitor who qualifies using the criteria set out in PHASE 1 on the understanding that the final decision on selecting an alternate in this PHASE 2 will be at the sole discretion of the selection committee. Any athlete selected in this PHASE 2 will be given a maximum of three (3) days to decide after being invited. It is very important that all parents/guardians be fully prepared to make a quick decision if their child has applied to be on the National Team.  Timing is crucial as travel arrangements and uniforms orders must be made.

The decision of the selection committee respecting the Alternate position selected in Phase 1 and Phase 2 is final.

                        iii.    Two Locals may also be any combination of CEC/CCC Open Locals (actual placing will be used) or USA Climbing sanctioned competitions (actual placing will be used). In order for the points from CEC/CCC Open Locals or from USA Climbing to be recorded, the competitor must provide proof of their placing at these competitions within 2 weeks of the last day of the competition via email to the Youth Points Coordinator. 1. Continental Championships (bi-annual)

a.    This selection process is still being drafted and will be posted well before the next Continental Championships in 2010.

B.  OPEN DIVISION SELECTION PROCESSES

  1. With respect to the Open Division, 10 male and 10 female athletes will be selected for the National Team for each of Difficulty and Bouldering based on the point system outlined below.  Open Points Registration is available to anyone 16 years of age and over as at December 31, 2009. Sixteen is the minimum age permitted to attend IFSC sanctioned competitions.
  1. In addition, if a competitor wants to have their points tracked from CEC/CCC Open sanctioned competitions, they must first register on line.  Annual Fee is $42.00.  If a CEC Youth member (16 or over) wants to compete in Open and have their points tracked in the Open Registry then they must also apply for the Open Division.

  1. Open Points will only be awarded from and after the date a competitor has registered.  AA one week grace period for registration after the conclusion of a Local competition (no grace period for Regionals or Nationals) is being implemented again for the 2008-2009 competition year. See the “Membership” tab on our website for information on how to register.

  1. The top three males and the top three females on the National Team will represent Canada at IFSC sanctioned competitions. If one of the top three are unable to attend then the fourth place competitor in the Registry will be approached and so on.  The Open coordinator will contact eligible members regarding international competitions.

·   TThe points awarded in the best Regional Competition; plus

·               The points awarded in the best three Open Local CEC Sanctioned Competitions.  (For the 2008/2009 season we have removed the ability to use USA Climbing Competitions as qualifying CEC Locals.  Canada is now fortunate to have numerous high caliber climbing events within its borders thanks to the efforts of all those involved in the Tour De Bloc).
